About the Victoria University of Wellington
Established in 1897, Victoria University of Wellington, also known as Te Herenga Waka, began to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Later, teaching began at its main Kelburn campus and Pipitea and Te Aro campuses in 1899. Today, the university has eight faculties and over 200 study areas, including Law, Business, Data Science, Engineering, Health, Science, Architecture, and Education. Most of the undergraduate programs are three years, and the graduate and MBA programs are one to two years.
Victoria University of Wellington has popular courses in several areas. Among international students, the BA options include a 3-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB), which charges NZD 38,000 per year, a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), which charges NZD 36,000 per year, a Bachelor of Science in Data Science, which charges NZD 38,000 per year, and a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, which charges NZD 33,000 per year. A majority of the MA programs last for 1-2 years.
Victoria University of Wellington has a strong name worldwide. It is ranked #240 in the QS World University Rankings, improving from last year, and sits in the 401–500 range in the Times Higher Education rankings for 2026. It is ranked #506 by U.S. News. It has been considered to be among the top 1-2% universities in many subjects globally. It usually ranks in 3rd or 4th place in New Zealand, after Auckland and Otago. Law, Humanities, Development Studies, and Library Science are probably among the university’s best subjects.
Victoria University of Wellington has very positive employment outcomes for its students. Most employed individuals get their first jobs within six months after completing their studies. The starting salary packages are usually in the range of NZD 50,000 to 60,000 per year for most students. However, some students get much higher salaries.
