Planning to study abroad. Need to take the TOEFL exam? Here is some important news: the TOEFL syllabus has changed a lot in 2026. Starting January 21, 2026 ETS launched a TOEFL iBT exam. The test is now shorter, smarter and more practical. The TOEFL exam tests four core skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The way it tests them has completely changed. The test is now more adaptive and practical.

What is the TOEFL Exam? (Quick Overview)

The TOEFL exam is a test of English as a language. It is one of the widely accepted English tests in the world. Thousands of universities in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and other countries use it. The TOEFL iBT is the popular version. You can take it at a test center or from home.

TOEFL 2026 Syllabus: Section-Wise Breakdown

 1. TOEFL Reading Part -New Syllabus

The Reading section has been made adaptive, that is, questions are automatically adjusted according to your performance. The total number of items included in it is 35 to 48, divided into two modules. The initial module is the same challenge among all. Depending on how you perform, you will be given a harder or easier second module.

It has now three reading tasks - to replace the old format of two lengthy 700-word passages:

 • Complete the Words: You will receive a paragraph of an academic text in which there are 10 words with missing letters. You are required to complete the blanks. This is a test of vocabulary and word recognition.

 • Read in Daily Life: You read short, everyday texts (15-150 words) including emails, text messages, campus notices, memos, or menus. Questions challenge your real-life reading comprehension.

 • Read an Academic Text: A passage of about 200 words of academic text with multiple choice questions at the end -this is more or less the same as old TOEFL, only it is shorter.

 • Estimated time: About 27 minutes. The part is shorter and more diverse than previously and challenges both academic and real-life reading abilities.

 2. TOEFL Listening Section - New Syllabus

In 2026 the Listening section is also adaptive, consisting of 35-45 items in two modules. The former is common to all, and the latter is customized to your performance. Gone are the 60-minute long listening marathon sessions. The new format is shorter, quicker, and more diverse. Listening tasks have four types:

• Listen and Select a Response: You are presented with one spoken sentence or question and have to select the best reply out of the four given. The words are NOT displayed on the screen, you just listen to them. This is a test of your comprehension of spoken English on the spot.

• Listen to a Conversation: You listen to a brief everyday or campus-life conversation and respond to multiple-choice questions regarding the conversation.

• Listen to an Announcement: You listen to a brief campus/classroom announcement and respond to comprehension questions.

• Academic Talk: This is an online version of the old lecture-type questions, except that it is shorter and more specific. Estimated time: About 27 minutes. Note taking is not prohibited and advised.

 3. TOEFL Writing Section — New Syllabus

The Writing section is greatly revised. The long essay is no longer a traditional one. Rather, the section consists of 3, shorter, practical writing tasks, having a total of 12 items to be answered. Approximately 23 minutes estimated time. There are three types of writing tasks:

• Build a Sentence: You are provided with a set of words in the incorrect sequence and you have to rearrange the words to create a correct and grammatically correct sentence. This is a direct test of grammar knowledge.

• Write an Email: You are given a real-life situation and must write a short email response. On-screen information is presented with the context and requirements. This is a practical written communication test.

• Academic Discussion Task: This is a task that is still retained in the old format of TOEFL. You are presented with a discussion prompt of a professor and two student answers. You are to write your response (at least 100 words) and include your opinion or thoughts. You have 10 minutes.

4. TOEFL Speaking Section — New Syllabus

The Speaking section has been totally restructured. The previous four integrated tasks are no longer. There are only two kinds of speaking tasks, with 11 items. It takes an estimated 8 minutes (a lot less than before). There are two types of speaking tasks:

• Repeat after the Speaker: You will listen to a sentence or phrase, and repeat it. This assesses your pronunciation, intonation and naturalness of speech. The recording will play once. This task has a total of 7 sentences.

• Take an Interview: You are asked 4 questions about a given topic. The questions get progressively more difficult. You will have 45 seconds to answer each question and no time to think. This is the same as an actual conversation or interview.

Your answers are recorded and scored by AI and human raters, who will score your pronunciation, clarity, fluency and how you answer the question.

TOEFL 2026 Scoring: New 1–6 Band Scale

This is one of the major changes in the TOEFL 2026 syllabus. The old 0-120 score range will be replaced by a new 1.0-6.0 band scale (similar to IELTS and CEFR - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Section

Score Range (New)

Score Range (old)

Listening

1.0 – 6.0

0 – 30

Writing

Speaking

Total Score

1.0 – 6.0 (avg)

0 – 120

Your total score is the average of your four section scores rounded up to the nearest half band. So, if your average was 5.125, your score will be 5.0.

Note: Between 2026 and 2028, your score report will include BOTH the new 1-6 band score and the old 0-120 score. This will allow them to adapt to the new scoring system. From 2028, only the 1-6 band score will be shown.

You will get your test result within 72 hours of the test - not the 6-10 days you get now.
